Preparatory groundwork for the construction of the proposed European Museum of Karst (EMK) at "nad Stenami" (= "top of the Walls") is progressing relentlessly. In spite of a negative response from the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning of Slovenia, (communicated to the public on 15th March 2006), members of the steering committee of the EMK retain their conviction that building the EMK at the "top of the Walls" would actually be an improvement to, and not a total desecration of, this remarkable landscape. All indicatations suggest that they are unprepared to listen to reasonable counter arguments and that they will maintain their intransigent stance to the bitter end.
The Speleological Society of Ljubljana actively endorses the principle of developing the EMK in Slovenia, but is deeply concerned about the policy of aggressive promotion relating to the siting of the EMK on "nad Stenami". As regards the outline scheme's proposed location, establishing the EMK in the middle of an unpopulated karst wilderness would brutally and irreversibly mutilate what is currently a well preserved and virtually pristine natural phenomenon - Planinsko polje. In view of this concern, in January 2006, the Speleological Society of Ljubljana sent a proposal to the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, requesting additional protection for the northern part of the polje, prohibiting construction of the EMK buildings and related logistical facilities that would be out of place in this unspoilt area.
Therefore, as an organization and as concerned individuals, we invite you to support our initiative, either by joining the list of supporters of our initiative, or by sending an appeal directly to the Minister for the Environment and Spatial Planning, Janez Podobnik (Dunajska 48, 1000 Ljubljana, 1000 Slovenia).
